weddings hams birthdays and fitting in the world.

i think i might start re-updating this blog, starting from today.
i had planned to backtrack and update everything up to now, but i know if i attempt to do that, i will end up not doing it at all.

so here goes from now!

we just got back from london and spain, bizarrest and funnest experience ever. i get to london and think wow i am completely dowdy and unfashionable and such a poor, freeloading idiot, my god i don't fit in here anymore, freak out. then i get into the swing of things, go nuts over food markets - more than 10 types of tomatoes, mushrooms, olives, cheeses; go to bookshops - 3 ffreaking levels; party; have a social life; watch tv; go to amazing markets; stay up late; have friends (i'd forgotten what that feels like), and then get back here and now its very "wwwwwhhaaaaaaaa???????????". so my poor little heart is going through some turmoil right now! i'm not sure which world i fit into.

coming back to the kids was amazing though, i'd taken some pics and videos of the plane rides - going through clouds, the tv's on the back of the seats - you could see their minds ticking over as they watched them. got to give them some great gifts that people gave me from london. the percy pig tail sweeties were a hit - each one took about 30 mins to eat one, stopping every 3 minutes to say "mmmmmm tan acido y TAN rico" (mmmmmm so sour and SO delicious). i have yet to unleash the other goodies i bought home from them. the 1 penny and 2 penny coins were also a hit despite the fact they are worth about 13 guatemalan cents.

right, i'm going to keep these posts short and sweet, hopefully that will inspire me to do it more often....

long time no blog

hi there,

sorry for the lack of contact in so long, then a bombardment of photos, but i've been very happily innundated with visitors for the last few months...
first we had two groups visiting from the states to do a) a design workshop with the kids and b) a digital storytelling workshop with the kids.. both were lots of fun, but lots of work...

jess came at the end of the last one, we had a great few weeks in guatemala, soaking up santiago and a few weekend trips... after she left we had to do a visa run to mexico, so met up with her in san cristobal mexico which was an ace little break of lots of good food and wine - something we don't get treated to much here... and shopping.

upon returning we had christmas in santiago, which was a bit sad without family, but we had a ball with a family here, and then christmas morning we rowed out to the lake and had a picnic with smoked salmon bagels, cheeses and wines (all bought on the way back from mex!)

just before new years, jo and rob arrived from london so we spent a few days in antigua, then came up to the lake for new years eve - a 7 course meal with matching wine (lah de dah!), guatemalan music and then for midnight we all went out on a boat to the middle of the lake and watched the fireworks from the towns all around the lake. it was spectacular...

having jo and rob here was a laugh a minute, no every 20 seconds, and was great to fall in love again with this place... seeing it with new eyes again...

now we're back to normality for a few days until we get more guests, this is ace! planning a lot for the new year with fotokids, its going to be busier this year, we're bringing in a new group of 16-20 year olds to do graphic design and potentially start their own little studio as time goes on... classes start at the end of jan, so a few more weeks of relaxation....

santiago atitlan...

guate begins...

it has begun!
i have started the first few weeks with the kids, and although it will take the kids a while to warm up (ie speak), its gonna be great. it took the city kids about 5 months last time, so i'll have patience! went to the city to make my plan for the year and its going to be ace fun.
apart from school and the end of the rainy season (hurrah), we've just been focusing a lot on food (yeeeeeah). we did a detox, and ate all natural, so that was good, if not slightly headachey and narky to begin with ("edgy" as kenny described me!). but are now back on the eating trail, kenny's making all sorts of delights such as grapefruit, lime and ginger jam, hoummous and baba ganoush, and of course the famous chili sauce which has already kicked off to a flying start. we are just in the process of finalising label design before the empire takes over guatemala!
jess is coming to visit soon, so we'll be looking forward to a few mini trips around gaute, to see some more of this magnificent country... we're welcoming any art supplies that anyone would like to donate, jess is going to squish her suitcase to the max!
love lots,
bree x

mexi fest and guate begins... and we're married!

not really. we’re just being introduced as a married couple so as not to cause any scandal in the town as an unmarried couple living together!! Its quite funny introducing kenny as my spouse. maybe that will satisfy some certain grandmothers and friends on our case??

mexico was incredible, we spent a few weeks thawing out on the beaches of puerto escondido and mazunte, eating shedloads of fish tacos, and as we love to do best, tried to spend the majority of the time in a hammock. oaxaca city was rad shopping and stringy cheese city, heaps of cool art going on as well. there is so much more going on in terms of food, art, music than guatemala. Its as if guate got left behind somewhere.... but even for that reason, guatemala is so amazing.

we had either forgotten or underestimated the beauty of this lake, it has to be one of the most beautiful and magical places in the world, and we have a real estate agents view of one of the lake and an honest view of the volcano in the background. our place is a cozy little stone cottage with the classroom attached to it, and the kids come for a mixture of photography, graphic design, art and english classes for four days a week. the rest of the time we’ll be living a wholesome lifestyle, enjoying the town, the lake, the uber friendly people, and kennys cooking!!!! the demand for kennef tangs sweet chilli sauce has been overwhelming, so much that kennys been put to work ahead of schedule.

here are some photos of the mexi fest and our place in santiago atitlan..... now open for visitors!!!

big love,
bree and kenny xxx
